Injection of the Hip

Other tests such as hip injections often provide further valuable information into the diagnosis of hip pain. The hip may be injected with a combination of local anaesthetic and hydrocortisone or purely local anaesthetic. If the local anaesthetic injection into the hip provides good relief of pain, this provides the clinician with valuable information that the pain is in fact coming from the hip. This is not performed as a treatment for your pain but will usually only last 24 to 48 hours. Usually after this one would expect the pain to return but it has provided the doctor with definite information on the location of your pain.

Hip Arthroscopy

Arthroscopy of the hip is a surgical procedure that is increasing in popularity for certain hip disorders. This involves the insertion of a telescope and some very fine operating instruments into the joint. This is performed under a general anaesthetic in an accredited operating theatre. Once you are asleep you will be placed on a traction table and some traction placed on the affected leg. This will result in a gap between the femoral head and the acetabulum in the hip joint and through keyhole surgery (two to three cuts of less than 1cm long) the various instruments will be able to be inserted.

Acetabular tears, chondral labral tears, flaps of cartilage and loose bodies from within the hip joint may be completely resected with this procedure. Following the procedure there are usually no sutures required although the hip may often be slightly swollen. This is usually performed as a day surgical procedure. The patient is usually fit to go home that evening. If there is significant discomfort following the procedure crutches may be required for two to three days.

The recuperation following hip arthroscopy is very dependent on the pathology found at the time. For minor procedures the hip may be close to back to normal in one week, however, for major procedures within the hip, it may be three to four months before the hip has completely settled. In some cases a hip arthroscopy may be performed and no pathology found. In these cases one may expect no improvement following the surgical procedure.
